Making a Difference in our Community. You might be surprised to know that over the past year, our Club has collected and shipped 2,000 pairs of used eyeglasses to SC Lions Vision Services (SCLVS). During the May business breakfast meeting, Lion Dave Hunt explained that our Club has six collection boxes in various locations throughout Lake Wylie and Clover. Once the eyeglasses are received by SCLVS at their eyeglass service center, they are cleaned, sorted by prescription and then distributed to medical and religious missions. The Clover Leos also collect used eyeglasses throughout the school year.
You might also be surprised to know that our Club has provided vision financial assistance to 71 people this year. Children are referred by Clover School District nurses, while adults are referred by Clover Area Assistance Center. Approved applicants are sent to Dr. Benjamin Poole who shares in the financial assistance. Lion Dave also described a recent, somewhat unusual case, in which an 81-year old gentleman was diagnosed with cataracts. While the gentleman is enrolled in Medicare, he was unable to pay the deductible needed for cataract surgery. Consequently, the Board recently approved payment of the Medicare deductible. The gentlemen will soon be scheduled for the much-needed surgery and will enjoy restored vision, thanks to our Club’s support and the efforts of the Vision Committee.
